ELKHORN — The Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve received a $685,000 federal grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association.
The grant will fund improvements to the Reserve's Visitor Center, including the construction of a redesigned parking lot and walkway to improve accessibility. The new parking lot will better support traffic flow from the entrance gate and create a designated school bus drop off area.

SALINAS, CA – Today, Congressman Jimmy Panetta (CA-20) announced that communities in Monterey and Santa Cruz Counties will receive federal grants totaling over $2 million from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The grants are provided through the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) and HOME Investments Partnership (HOME) program.
Monterey County will receive funding totaling $1,394,327 through the CDBG. The city of Santa Cruz will receive funding totaling $543,095 through the CDBG and a HOME grant totaling $382,425.
SALINAS, CA – Today, Congressman Jimmy Panetta (CA-20) announced that the University Corporation at Monterey Bay received a federal grant totaling $4,998,980.00 from the National Science Foundation (NSF). The award will support high-achieving, low-income students with demonstrated financial need at California State University Monterey Bay (CSUMB), Hartnell College, California State University Dominguez Hills, and El Camino College.
Congressman Jimmy Panetta, D-Carmel Valley, announced a $685,000 federal grant Aug. 21 for the enhancement of the visitor center at Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve.
The grant, from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association, will support the second phase of the visitor center's enhancement project, and will primarily be used for a redesign of the reserve's parking lot and walkway to increase accessibility, traffic flow and create a school bus drop drop-off area.
It will also be used to create natural water catchment in landscaped "bio-swales."
