WATSONVILLE >> On break from Capitol Hill, Rep. Jimmy Panetta, D-Carmel Valley, hosted a series of town hall meetings this week to hear from constituents and build momentum for the upcoming midterm election.

The freshman congressman met with about 100 people in Watsonville on Wednesday for a wide-ranging discussion that touched on immigration, agriculture, the Pajaro River, affordable housing, student loans and a contested flight path. Erica Padilla-Chavez, CEO of Pajaro Valley Prevention and Student Assistance, moderated the event.

SALINAS, CA – Today, Congressman Jimmy Panetta announced that Mesa Del Rey Airport received a grant totaling $454,050 from the U.S. Department of Transportation through the Federal Aviation Administration. The funds will be used to rehabilitate the lighting systems along the edge of Runway 11/29, to ensure safe airfield operations in low visibility conditions.

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Jimmy Panetta (CA-20) joined Reps. Mike Thompson (CA-05), John Garamendi (CA-03), Jared Huffman (CA-02) and other bipartisan members of the California delegation, including Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (CA-23) and Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (CA-12), in writing to the President to ask him to immediately grant California's request for a Major Disaster Declaration for the destructive wildfires that have hit Lake, Mendocino, and Napa Counties over the past two weeks.

SALINAS, CA – Today, Congressman Jimmy Panetta (CA-20) announced that communities in Monterey and Santa Cruz Counties will receive federal grants totaling over $4 million from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The grants are provided through the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG), Emergency Shelter Grants (ESG), and HOME programs.

Seaside >> Dennis Lewallen, a retired U.S. Army infantryman, was searching the internet from his Kansas home recently for information on a man he had served with who had been killed in Vietnam.

The name Laszlo Holovits pulled in a Monterey Herald story from 2015.

"I am trying to decide if there would be any benefit to Mrs. Holovits in contacting her," he emailed the reporter.

SALINAS, CA – Today, immediately following the Trump Administration's announcement that it will seek to roll back current fuel economy and emissions standards and nullify California's waiver, Congressman Jimmy Panetta (CA-20) joined a coalition of 60 Democratic Members of Congress in announcing a resolution (H.Con.Res 130) to oppose the move. The resolution demonstrates multi-state support for the existing federal clean car standards and states' right to adopt California's more stringent standards.

SALINAS, CA – Congressman Jimmy Panetta (D-CA-20) and Congressman Steve Knight (R-CA-25) introduced bipartisan legislation to support seasonal employees of the National Park Service (NPS). Under existing regulation, seasonal employees of the NPS are only permitted to work at one National Park annually. The bill, H.R. 6599, would amend the law to permit seasonal employees to work at multiple NPS sites in a given year.
