Fort Ord >> The Epic Flag rode across the country on the back of a motorcycle, flew over the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery and at last has made it back home. The large U.S. flag flew over the California Central Coast Veterans Cemetery in its inaugural Memorial Day ceremony Monday morning.

"We had to fight a lot of battles to make this happen," state Assemblymember Anna Caballero said of the cemetery.

On a bright Memorial Day morning, two men from Salinas and another from Prunedale hoisted up an American flag in Seaside -- sunlight gleamed through the stars and stripes as it rose.

The flag meant much more than a symbol of America to the men.

In 33 days, they'd crisscrossed the nation on three motorcycles, eventually flying the brand-new flag over the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery.

SANTA CRUZ >> Abigail Garcia, Morgan Scheiblauer and Emma Barsanti stepped up Monday to do their part in the 151st Memorial Day observance attended by more than 120 people at Evergreen Cemetery.

The trio, members of Girl Scout Troop 10116 in Live Oak, folded the American flag as Army retiree Chuck Woodson explained what each of the 13 folds signifies.

They heard Sungye Hawke, student minister of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Santa Cruz County lead a prayer: "We are grateful and we are free."

CONGRESSMAN JIMMY Panetta and three other members of the U.S. House of Representatives traveled to the Korean Peninsula last weekend to meet with high-level officials and a U.S. commander about the possible denuclearization of North Korea.

During the trip, Panetta and his colleagues, Republicans Martha McSally and David Schweikert, and fellow Democrat Tom O'Halleran, met with South Korean Deputy Defense Minister for Policy, Yeo Suk-joo, to discuss diplomatic efforts to defuse the threat from North Korea.

WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Representatives Jimmy Panetta (D-CA), Pete Visclosky (D-IN), Jeff Fortenberry (R-NE), Chuck Fleischmann (R-TN), and Jim Banks (R-IN) successfully included an amendment in the Fiscal Year 2019 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), to speed the elimination of cesium chloride, which can be used to make "dirty bombs," or radiological dispersal devices. This amendment reduces the risk of a catastrophic radiological attack while upgrading medical technology used across the country.

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Members of the bipartisan Problem Solvers Caucus Congressmen Jimmy Panetta (D-CA-20), Tom Reed (R-NY-23), Josh Gottheimer (D-NJ-05), Thomas Suozzi (D-NY-03), and Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA-08) signed the discharge petition that would force a series of floor votes on four Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), immigration, and border security proposals under the "Queen of the Hill" rule. More than half of the Republicans who have signed are members of the Caucus.

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Jimmy Panetta (CA-20) signed a discharge petition to force a vote to restore net neutrality protections. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) moved in December 2017 to roll back net neutrality rules for Internet providers put in place under the previous Administration. On May 16, the Senate passed a measure restoring net neutrality rules.
