Congressman Jimmy Panetta's (D-Carmel) office announced over $76.96 million in federal grants dispersed around the Central Coast in 2017. Of that, the lion's share, more than $54.09 million, went to Monterey County. Santa Cruz County collected some $16.85 million, San Benito County received less than $3.47 million, and Santa Clara County $2.56 million.

WATSONVILLE — City officials welcomed state and federal legislators Friday morning, asking for their help with a variety of issues affecting Watsonville.

Congressman Jimmy Panetta, Assemblywoman Anna Caballero and a representative from Senator Bill Monning's office were present at the Watsonville City Council's annual "legislative breakfast" meeting at the Civic Plaza.

SALINAS, Calif. - A dreamer, who goes to Hartnell College, is heading to Washington to see the State of the Union in person.

Adrianna Gonzalez said her boss told her about the opportunity to attend the event in Washington, D.C. Tuesday and decided to go for it. She met Congressman Jimmy Panetta in September and has been passionate about helping other DACA recipients like herself. She said she is both nervous and excited to be in the presence of the president.

On Jan. 19, on the eve of the recent federal government shutdown, federal employees were uncertain. A tweet from the Presidio of Monterey read, "Presidio of Monterey is currently in the planning and preparation stages for a potential furlough. We are focused on our civilian workforce family. More info to come as needed. ‘Hope for the best, prepare for the worst.'"

Of the Presidio's 249 employees, 136 were furloughed on Monday, Jan. 22.

A movement is underway to have a resolution for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program by Feb. 8, said Congressman Jimmy Panetta at Hartnell College on Wednesday.

If a deal is not reached by that date, then there is an assurance to bring forward legislation to the Senate floor for debate, Panetta added.

Allí, Panetta le aseguró a un grupo de estudiantes, líderes y soñadores que si legisladores no se ponen de acuerdo en una solución para DACA, antes del 8 de febrero, 2018, se realizara un debate en el pleno del senado.

SALINAS, Calif. - President Donald Trump said he's open to creating a pathway to citizenship for hundreds of thousands of young people who were brought to the country as children and are now here illegally. He told reporters, "we're going to morph into it" in 10 to 12 years.

This comes just before politicians head back to Washington for more immigration talks.

But before leaving the Central Coast, congressman Jimmy Panetta met with DACA students in the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program (DACA) to give them an update.

Salinas >> As Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell wondered out loud recently what the urgency was on crafting and voting on legislation related to the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, Congressman Jimmy Panetta had a few things on his mind.

"Well, I'll tell you what the rush is," Panetta, D-Carmel Valley, told a crowd at Hartnell College on Wednesday. "Every day before March 5, over 100 Dreamers are losing their status. Every day after March 5, 1,000 Dreamers will lose their status."

President Donald Trump late Monday signed H.R. 95, a continuing resolution to fund the government through February 8 and effectively end a three-day shutdown of most government offices.

The Senate passed the bill earlier in the day, voting 80 to 18, with 33 Democrats joining 47 Republicans in voting for the measure.

The House followed the Senate in passing the bill, with a 265 to 150 vote. There were 45 House Democrats joining 221 Republicans in voting for the bill.

Only six House Republicans joined 144 Democrats in opposing it.
