WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Jimmy Panetta (D-Carmel Valley) announced that he will participate in this year's Selma Bridge Crossing Jubilee on Sunday, March 8, 2020, in Selma, Alabama, to commemorate the series of marches that led to the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. The bipartisan congressional pilgrimage will be led by Congressman John Lewis of Georgia, a leader in the Civil Rights Movement.
WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Jimmy Panetta (D-Carmel Valley) voted for an emergency supplemental appropriations bill to address the coronavirus outbreak. The bill includes funding for testing, vaccine development, treatments, and support for state and local preparedness. The legislation passed on a 415-2 vote.

WASHINGTON, DC – The U.S. House of Representatives unanimously passed Congressman Jimmy Panetta's (D-Carmel Valley) bipartisan legislation, the Legal Services for Homeless Veterans Act, H.R.3749. The Legal Services for Homeless Veterans Act directs the Secretary of Veterans Affairs to provide grants to organizations that provide legal services to homeless veterans and veterans at risk for homelessness.

SALINAS, CA – Today, Congressman Jimmy Panetta (D-Carmel Valley) announced that he introduced gun safety legislation to ensure completion of background checks through the National Instant Criminal Background Check (NICS) system. Currently, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is statutorily required to purge incomplete gun background checks from its systems if they are not completed within 88 days, a practice that could allow gun sales without a completed background check.
The FBI would no longer be able to purge incomplete gun background checks from its systems if legislation by Rep. Jimmy Panetta becomes law.

The brand new El Gabilan library in north Salinas is now open. The facility is at the same location where the old one once stood on North Main Street, which was founded in 1953. Nearly 70 years later, the new $20 million facility stands two stories tall, at nearly 21,000 square feet. Hundreds gathered at the grand opening Saturday afternoon, including city and local leaders.
"This is a step to the future. As we move forward with more housing, this will become a center focus point for our community," said Salinas Mayor Joe Gunter.

MARINA — Last month, Rob Nicely of Carmel Building and Design opened up a project he is currently constructing in Carmel Valley to help introduce the concept of Passive House to the region. On Thursday, the Monterey Bay Regional Climate Action Compact's meeting in Marina began to lay the foundation for entities in the area to come together to put the Passive House concept into action.
