SALINAS, CA – Today, Congressman Jimmy Panetta (D-Carmel Valley) announced a $152,929 federal grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) will be awarded to UC Santa Cruz. The funding will be used to evaluate marine mammal data to improve our understanding of habitat usage, migratory routes, the impacts of human activities near marine predators, and more in the Southern Ocean. The NSF supports research, innovation, and discovery to spur economic growth and advance the betterment of STEM communities and education.
“Increasing our understanding our world’s oceans directly impacts fisheries, tourism, and research institutions here on the Central Coast of California,” said Congressman Panetta. “Through UCSC’s work to evaluate critical data surrounding ocean organisms, our communities will be better prepared to respond to the climate crisis and protect marine life. I am proud to support federal funding and research opportunities so Central Coast institutions can continue to advance the frontiers of science.”
