Gilroy, El Paso, Dayton, and the 250 mass shootings this year demonstrate that our nation is afflicted by a gun violence crisis. Thoughts and prayers are with the shooting victims and their families. But, clearly, that is not enough. It is critical that Congress, our country and our communities deliver not only words, but also action on gun safety reform.

DEMOCRATIC CONGRESSMAN Jimmy Panetta this week demanded that the U.S. Senate pass federal bills requiring background checks for firearms and a ban on assault weapons after shooters in Gilroy, El Paso and Dayton killed and injured dozens of people. Panetta made numerous comments on social media in the past week in response to the shootings, including calling for Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to hold votes on two background checks bills OK'd by the House of Representatives in February. "This inaction must stop," Panetta said on Facebook. "We know background checks save lives.

WASHINGTON D.C. - Central Coast Congressman Jimmy Panetta is one of 213 members of the House Democratic Caucus to demand a vote on bipartisan bills to prevent gun violence in the wake of recent mass shootings.

On Wednesday, the members wrote a letter to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell calling on him to immediately bring the Senate back into session to pass H.R. 8, the Bipartisan Background Checks Act and H.R. 1112, the Enhanced Background Checks Act.

The three House of Representatives' bills aim to stop the abusive practice of robocalls, offer protections for consumers and create a new federal government "robocall division."
