A continued and growing labor shortage, immigration reform, nutrition and research funding are some of the top priorities and concerns of the agriculture industry here in the Salinas Valley.

With the national Farm Bill on the legislative horizon in 2018, Congressman Jimmy Panetta of the 20th District spearheaded an agricultural roundtable on Thursday to gather the key priorities and concerns of the industry and local leaders.

Salinas >> An agriculture roundtable was held at Hartnell College on Thursday giving agricultural and local leaders an opportunity to speak directly with three members of the U.S. House of Representatives Agriculture Committee about topics important to the Central Coast.

"Today's legislative hearing, our ag listening session in anticipation of the reauthorization of the farm bill, was an excellent opportunity to hear from many of the voices … from the salad bowl of America," said Congressman Jim Costa, D-Fresno.

Rep. Jimmy Panetta, D-Carmel, sharply criticized President Donald Trump's North Korea comments at an agriculture event Thursday, saying the president must stop trying to play the "bully" in the tense situation.

Panetta and Rep. Jim Costa, D-Fresno, both had critical remarks for the president as they spoke at a Farm Bill Forum in Salinas.

Local officials praised the recent federal decision to address the spike in airplane noise that has plagued Los Altos and other local communities since 2015.

Rep. Jimmy Panetta announced Tuesday that Habitat for Humanity Monterey Bay, a regional nonprofit housing corporation in Santa Cruz, will receive a federal grant of $315,000 from the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

This Home Investment Partnerships Program award will be used for first-time homebuyer mortgage assistance and new construction in Los Esteros Court.

"Providing affordable housing is one of the greatest challenges we face on the central coast of California," Panetta said in a press release.

Congressman Jimmy Panetta announced Monday that the San Benito Health Foundation received a federal grant of $1.8 million.

The foundation received $1,806,177 from the US Department of Health and Human Services, according to a press release dated August 7. Santa Cruz County received $1,231,719 from the same grant program.

Rep. Jimmy Panetta has announced that health centers in Santa Cruz County and San Benito County have received federal grants totaling more than $3 million from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Santa Cruz County's share was $1.2 million.

"Community health centers and clinics are integral to our region's health care system," said Panetta in a statement released Monday. "These funds will help San Benito and Santa Cruz health centers."
