A movement is underway to have a resolution for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program by Feb. 8, said Congressman Jimmy Panetta at Hartnell College on Wednesday.
If a deal is not reached by that date, then there is an assurance to bring forward legislation to the Senate floor for debate, Panetta added.

Salinas >> As Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell wondered out loud recently what the urgency was on crafting and voting on legislation related to the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, Congressman Jimmy Panetta had a few things on his mind.
"Well, I'll tell you what the rush is," Panetta, D-Carmel Valley, told a crowd at Hartnell College on Wednesday. "Every day before March 5, over 100 Dreamers are losing their status. Every day after March 5, 1,000 Dreamers will lose their status."
President Donald Trump late Monday signed H.R. 95, a continuing resolution to fund the government through February 8 and effectively end a three-day shutdown of most government offices. The Senate passed the bill earlier in the day, voting 80 to 18, with 33 Democrats joining 47 Republicans in voting for the measure. The House followed the Senate in passing the bill, with a 265 to 150 vote. There were 45 House Democrats joining 221 Republicans in voting for the bill. Only six House Republicans joined 144 Democrats in opposing it. |
