He'd survived nearly three years of extreme hunger, freezing temperatures and psychological abuse as a prisoner of war in Camp No. 5 along the banks of the Yalu River that divides China and North Korea.

Army Pfc. Robert Fletcher restarted his life in Ann Arbor after the Korean War, the trauma of combat and captivity never far from his mind.

He'd survived nearly three years of extreme hunger, freezing temperatures and psychological abuse as a prisoner of war in Camp No. 5 along the banks of the Yalu River that divides China and North Korea.

Back home, Fletcher's harrowing experience manifested itself as a myriad of health problems and severe PTSD that cropped up daily until his death at age 85.

MONTEREY – A bill to address the potentially deadly valley fever disease was co-introduced in the House of Representatives by Rep. Jimmy Panetta, D-Carmel Valley, in December.

HR 5438, the End Valley Fever Now Act, was introduced on Dec. 16 and referred to the Committee on Energy and Commerce, and to the Committee on Ways and Means.

Responding to growing concerns about airplane noise, U.S. Rep. Jackie Speier has proposed a series of bills that would allow airports to restrict flight times, require the Federal Aviation Administration to give greater primacy to noise impacts when developing flight routes and procedures and allow local communities to have a significant say in developing flight plans.

Residents who live near San Francisco International Airport may soon be hearing less noise from airplane flights thanks to a series of new bills that aim to mitigate the noise, U.S. Rep. Jackie Speier, D-San Francisco/San Mateo, announced Monday.

Speier is introducing five bills in Congress along with Rep. Anna Eshoo, D-Palo Alto, and Rep. Jimmy Panetta, D-Monterey, focused not only on reducing noise, but also prioritizing health impacts related to noise for residents.
