The U.S. House Ag Committee held a hearing to discuss multiple aspects of USDA Farm Bill Research Programs. Current research programs were discussed such as the Citrus Disease Research and Extension Program and climate change initiatives. The need for hemp research was also discussed.
Most recently, agriculture research through USDA and cooperators has allowed the eradication of plum pox disease. This disease impacts stone fruit, such as plums and peaches. The U.S. is the first country known to eradicate the disease, which was first detected in Pennsylvania in 1999.
Three Democratic House members who serve on the House Agriculture Committee — Reps. Jimmy Panetta of California, Cheri Bustos of Illinois and Kim Schrier of Wisconsin — on Oct. 17 introduced a bill to authorize a 5% annual funding increase over the next five years at the Agriculture Department.

Today, Congressman Jimmy Panetta (D-CA) returned from Congressional Delegation trip to Mexico regarding important improvements to the United States–Mexico–Canada Agreement (USMCA). While in Mexico, the members of Congress met with representatives from the Mexican Government as well as local workers.

As it gets ready to expand beyond phase one, the Central Coast Veterans Cemetery on the former Fort Ord received recognition on Oct. 9 from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, which presented an Organizational Excellence Award.
