WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Jimmy Panetta (D-Calif.), announced that two local airports received federal grants from the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Aviation Administration. Mesa Del Rey Airport received funds totaling $138,000 to be used for runway improvements and rehabilitation. Monterey Regional Airport received funds totaling $50,000 to study their participation in the Federal Aviation Administration Airport Improvement Program.
“North Korea’s continued provocations must be met with strong, steady, and strategic action, not schoolyard rhetoric” said Panetta. “That is why we are calling upon the President to implement a strategy that uses economic pressure, firm diplomacy, and deterrence to address this paramount national security challenge. North Korea’s advancing nuclear and missile capabilities represent a growing threat that must be met with comprehensive action that uses all the tools in our toolkit to deescalate tensions, reassure our allies, and protect American citizens.”
A bloc of House Democrats, criticizing President Donald Trump's rhetoric on North Korea as destabilizing, is urging the administration "to adopt a strong, strategic and steady policy toward North Korea."
In a letter to the president, 68 Democratic lawmakers labeled his recent rhetoric "counterproductive."

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressmen Jimmy Panetta (D-CA-20) and Carlos Curbelo (R-FL-26) introduced a bipartisan bill to ensure federal agencies complete implementation of a Federal Flood Risk Management Standard (FFRMS) for government-funded infrastructure projects to reduce exposure to flooding.
Rep. Jimmy Panetta (D-Salinas) has signed a petition to force the House of Representatives to consider the DREAM Act of 2017, according to a press release issued Monday.
The DREAM Act of 2017 is a bill that would permanently protect people who entered the country illegally as children, allowing them to remain and work legally in the U.S.
If the petition is signed by a majority of members of the House of Representatives, it would force the bill to be brought to the floor for a vote.
WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Jimmy Panetta (CA-20) signed a discharge petition to force consideration of H.R. 3440, the DREAM Act of 2017. H.R. 3440 is a bipartisan bill that would permanently protect DREAMers and allow them to remain and work legally in the United States. If the discharge petition is signed by a simple majority of Members in the House of Representatives (218 Members), it would force this critical piece of legislation to be brought to the Floor of the House for a vote.
CONGRESSMAN JIMMY Panetta last week honored three Monterey County motorcyclists who made a journey across 21 states to carry an American flag to Arlington National Cemetery, where it will be flown over the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier next week.
A group of riders, including Rick Phinney, Steve Culver, and Hy Libby, representing American Legion Post 31 in Salinas, made the trip to "raise awareness" and funds for the Central Coast Veterans Cemetery at Fort Ord, Panetta said.
National Institute of General Medical Sciences Grant Awarded to UCSC
The University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) received a federal grant totaling $377,776 per year for five years from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences to study T cell signaling.
"Our research addresses a fundamental process used by our immune T cells to recognize virus-infected cells and developing tumors in the body," said Professor Nikolaos Sgourakis, a professor in the Chemistry and Biochemistry Department at the University of California, Santa Cruz.
