Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula's Kids Eat Right Program received a Certificate of Congressional Recognition from Congressman Jimmy Panetta on May 9.
The certificate recognizes the hospital's work addressing the growing problem of obesity in Monterey County through its elementary school nutrition and fitness program. With approximately 45 percent of Monterey County residents with diabetes or prediabetes, the program targets children in local elementary schools when health habits are forming.
Congressman Jimmy Panetta is expected to announce the winner of the 2017 Congressional Art Competition in Hollister later this week.
According to a press release from Panetta's office, the 20th Congressional District representative will announce the winning entry at the Veterans' Memorial Building on Thursday May 11 at 5 p.m.
The winning entry will be displayed in the Capitol Building in Washington, DC. The winner and a family member will be invited to attend a special ceremony at the end of June with other young artists from around the country.

But a key official acknowledged the already complex project still faces a number of hurdles before it begins construction or operation, including potential cost overruns that could end up on Monterey Peninsula water bills and a complicated discharge permit.

"I'm pleased that the USDA is funding Professor Fairbairn's project. In order to support the next generation of agricultural producers, it is critical we gain a better understanding of land acquisition trends, particularly as this relates to land and capital access," said Congressman Jimmy Panetta (D-Carmel Valley). “I will continue to advocate for these efforts on a federal level, and work to expand opportunities for producers and institutions like UCSC that seek to study these trends.”

The roundtable discussion provided a great opportunity to help ensure the needs of organic farmers are represented in the upcoming Farm Bill, which Panetta will be helping to write as a member of the House Committee on Agriculture.
Panetta sits on the House Agriculture Committee which is already hosting hearings on the next Farm Bill. Food safety will most definitely be discussed by this committee and Congressman Panetta was enthusiastic about sharing what he learned today with other members of the Committee.
