Congratulations to the newly named local Fulbright recipients.

Congressman Jimmy Panetta, D-Calif., recently announced that nine outstanding individuals from California's 20th Congressional District received Fulbright awards during the 2016-2017 academic year.

"I offer my congratulations to these nine promising young leaders who are participating in the one of the most prestigious exchange programs in the world," Congressman Panetta stated. "I know that they will continue to inspire change through diplomacy and strengthen our foreign relations."

Rep. Jimmy Panetta announced that the University of California Santa Cruz was awarded a $77,000 federal grant from the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health & Human Development for a project called The Emergence of Prosocial Behavior in Infants.

The proposed research will improve our understanding of how infants begin to help others by employing a new methodological approach to studying transitions in social development.

The comment period ends July 26 for an executive order President Donald Trump signed April 28 that could weaken protections for 11 national marine sanctuaries and monuments.

The order calls for a review of all sanctuaries and monuments that were designated and expanded since April 28, 2007, exactly 10 years before Trump gave the order.

H.R. 2690, called the blue card bill, was introduced by Senator Dianne Feinstein in may. Representative Jimmy Panetta and Representative Luis Gutierrez along with 44 other congressman, are pushing to put undocumented agriculture workers on the path to citizenship. Under the agricultural worker program act, farm workers will have to show employment over the past 2 years, pay a fine and pass a thorough background check to receive a blue card. The current co-sponsors of H.R. 2690 are democrats.

On Monday, July 3, representatives from local arts nonprofits and organizations had a meeting with U.S. Rep. Jimmy Panetta, D-Carmel, in a conference room at CSU Monterey Bay. It was a meeting that could have a big impact.

The Arts Council for Monterey County arranged it so that the arts groups could state their best case for why Panetta's office should support what they do.

"There are so many things he touches throughout the year that can be helpful," said Arts Council Executive Director Paulette Lynch. "We can give him more ammunition."
