Spurred by several events over the past year, including project advocacy by Santa Cruz and Monterey counties and Congressman Jimmy Panetta, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has reinvigorated and accelerated the Federal Flood Risk Reduction Project on the Pajaro River, with the ultimate goal of improving levee protection for local homes and businesses.

Pajaro Valley Prevention and Student Assistance (PVPSA) has announced its upcoming 2017 Heroes In Prevention Award winners. The ceremony, which took place Oct. 19, featured keynote speaker Congressman Jimmy Panetta, along with local food and refreshments.

Because of PVPSA's focus on children, youth, families and community at large the organization will be honoring individuals who have demonstrated a commitment to prevention in the Pajaro Valley.

On Tuesday, October 17th, a bipartisan group of 79 Members of Congress sent a letter to Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue, Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Scott Gottlieb and Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Scott Pruitt, urging agencies responsible for regulating biotechnology to coordinate and advance policies and strategies that promote innovation in agriculture, domestically and internationally, through the President's Interagency Task Force on Agriculture and Rural Prosperity.

Good public policy depends on thorough and accurate data. For over 200 years, the Census Bureau has provided Congress and other federal agencies with a demographic portrait of the United States, which enables lawmakers to determine how resources should be allocated to meet the needs of the diverse populations within our country. However, this demographic portrait is incomplete in significant ways, because neither the decennial census nor the annual American Census Survey (ACS) ask respondents if they are willing to report sexual orientation and gender identity.

A bloc of House Democrats, criticizing President Donald Trump's rhetoric on North Korea as destabilizing, is urging the administration "to adopt a strong, strategic and steady policy toward North Korea."

In a letter to the president, 68 Democratic lawmakers labeled his recent rhetoric "counterproductive."
