SANTA CRUZ– As health care costs rise and a growing number of people cannot afford care, state and federal representatives are proposing and voting on bills to improve the issue.

Rep. Jimmy Panetta, D-Carmel Valley, voted for House bill 986 on May 9 and House bill 987 on May 16, which the House passed. Both bills protect people with preexisting medical conditions, lower prescription drug prices and eliminates short term health insurance plans lacking benefits.

The California Association for Bilingual Education, Pájaro Valley Chapter 66, announced its 2019 Scholarship recipients. They were chosen based on their academics, honors, extra-curricular activities, biliteracy abilities, community involvement, future plans and financial need.

The four recipients, from Pájaro Valley Unified School District, will each be awarded a $400 scholarship. The awardees from Pájaro Valley High School are Cecilia Garcia Tovar and Daniel Salgado. The honorees from Watsonville High School are Jimelda Lopez-Lopez and Lucia Nico-Silva.

SALINAS, Calif. - A bipartisan group of lawmakers is backing new legislation to improve living conditions in privatized military housing.

Central Coast Congressman Jimmy Panetta (D) is author of the Better Military Housing Act. Panetta says the bill will provide oversight and enhance the health, safety, and quality of privatized military housing.

Co-sponsors include House members Richard Hudson (R-NC), Anthony Brown (D-MD), John Carter (R-TX), Sanford Bishop (D-GA), Denny Heck (D-WA), Anna G. Eshoo (D-CA), Vicky Hartzler (R-MO), Van Taylor (R-TX), and Michael Waltz (R-FL).

WASHINGTON—Congressman Jimmy Panetta (D-Carmel Valley), Congresswoman Donna Shalala (FL-27) and members of the LGBT Equality Caucus on Wednesday introduced the Protecting LGBTQ Youth Act. This bill prevents the maltreatment of LGBTQ youth and improves outcomes for those who enter the child welfare system.

In February, both the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives held hearings where military families from across the country shared harrowing stories of living with mold, lead paint and rats, along with pleas to private management companies that appeared indifferent. In March, military leaders publicly apologized, acknowledging they had failed to oversee the companies since the military privatized housing management in 1996.

Rep. Jimmy Panetta, D-Carmel Valley, plans to introduce a bill that would improve military housing on the Central Coast and across the country.

The Better Military Housing Act would require the Department of Defense to work with military families to improve privatized military housing. The goal is to provide better oversight and enhance the health, safety, and quality of housing leased out through private contractors.
