SANTA CRUZ– As health care costs rise and a growing number of people cannot afford care, state and federal representatives are proposing and voting on bills to improve the issue.
Rep. Jimmy Panetta, D-Carmel Valley, voted for House bill 986 on May 9 and House bill 987 on May 16, which the House passed. Both bills protect people with preexisting medical conditions, lower prescription drug prices and eliminates short term health insurance plans lacking benefits.
A plan to open up drilling in California will result in 75 new oil wells over the next 20 years, many of them along the Central Coast, according to a new proposal unveiled by the Bureau of Land Management.
The California Association for Bilingual Education, Pájaro Valley Chapter 66, announced its 2019 Scholarship recipients. They were chosen based on their academics, honors, extra-curricular activities, biliteracy abilities, community involvement, future plans and financial need.
The four recipients, from Pájaro Valley Unified School District, will each be awarded a $400 scholarship. The awardees from Pájaro Valley High School are Cecilia Garcia Tovar and Daniel Salgado. The honorees from Watsonville High School are Jimelda Lopez-Lopez and Lucia Nico-Silva.

This bill prevents the maltreatment of LGBTQ youth and improves outcomes for those who enter the child welfare system.
