Santa Clara County House Reps Announce $6.6M+ in Federal Funding for Urban Forest Management in San Jose

October 17, 2023

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, U.S. Representatives Jimmy Panetta (CA-19), Zoe Lofgren (CA-18), Anna Eshoo (CA-16), and Ro Khanna (CA-17) announced that the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) will distribute $6,644,300 to the City of San Jose for two urban forest management projects.

“We must continue to combat climate change and make our communities greener. We voted for the Inflation Reduction Act – legislation that made the largest-ever investment to address the climate crisis. We’re proud that funding is being delivered across the country and locally to make communities more resilient and mitigate the risks of climate-related weather events, like wildfires,” said Reps. Panetta, Lofgren, Eshoo, and Khanna.

The Members announced the following grants:

  • $5,644,300 to ensure the maintenance of all public trees and plant 3,000 new trees.
  • $1,000,000 for vegetation management to reduce the risk of wildfires at Alum Rock Park.

This funding comes from the U.S. Forest Service’s Urban and Community Forestry Program, which supports urban tree-planting and urban forest planning and management. The Inflation Reduction Act, which Reps. Lofgren, Eshoo, Khanna, and Panetta voted in favor of, provided the Urban and Community Forestry funding that is being delivered around the country.
