Reps. Lofgren, Eshoo, Panetta Announce $2 Million in Federal Transportation Funding to Improve Monterey Road

February 24, 2023

SAN JOSE, CA – Today, U.S. Representatives Zoe Lofgren (CA-18), Anna G. Eshoo (CA-16), and Jimmy Panetta (CA-19) announced that the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) will provide a total of $2 million to begin the process of converting Monterey Road in San Jose from a highway into a grand boulevard that is safer and more accessible to nearby communities.

"Currently, Monterey Road is one of the highest-fatality corridors in San Jose. With high vehicle speeds, missing sidewalks, and a lack of safe crossings, the road is both hazardous and divides adjacent communities. We welcome investments that will help transform this corridor so pedestrians and drivers alike stay safe and areas downtown are connected," said Reps. Lofgren, Eshoo, and Panetta.

The funding comes from DOT's Reconnecting Communities Pilot Discretionary Grant Program. In October, Rep. Lofgren wrote to Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg in support of the City of San Jose's grant application for Monterey Road. In June 2022, Lofgren announced $7.5 million in federal funding to make rail crossings adjacent to Monterey Road safer.
