Rep. Panetta’s Statement on the Majority’s Partisan and Irresponsible Budget Resolution

February 26, 2025

Monterey, CA – United States Representative Jimmy Panetta (CA-19), a member of the House Ways and Means Committee, issued the following statement on the Republican Majority’s partisan and irresponsible budget resolution:

“Speaker Mike Johnson and the Majority’s budget resolution is a threat to working families, seniors, and students, outlining broad cuts to Medicaid, food assistance, and student loan relief while handing out massive tax breaks to billionaires.  The Majority’s plan irresponsibly adds trillions to the deficit without a serious strategy to pay for it, relying on unrealistic economic projections that will only exacerbate fiscal instability.  Using budget reconciliation, the Majority is attempting to push these extreme cuts through Congress with minimal debate and no bipartisan input, leaving millions of Americans vulnerable to losing essential services.

“That’s why I voted no, because this budget does not reflect our values or priorities.  In California’s 19th Congressional District 163,164 people rely on Medicaid, including 50,417 children and 26,000 seniors, while 81,000 residents depend on SNAP to put food on the table.  Instead of making it harder for people to access health care, afford groceries, or invest in their futures, we should be working together to lower costs, protect vital programs, and ensure an economy that benefits everyone.  I will continue to fight against these harmful cuts and stand up for the people of California’s 19th Congressional District.”
