Rep. Panetta’s Statement on the Inauguration of Donald J. Trump as the 47th President of the United States
Monterey, CA – United States Representative Jimmy Panetta (CA-19) released the following statement on the inauguration of Donald J. Trump as the 47th President of the United States of America:
“Today, as we have done 60 times in our nation’s history, we marked the inauguration of a new President of the United States. Power was ceded and power was gained, not through violence, but by the will of the American people choosing their leaders democratically. President Donald Trump has returned to the White House under the same oath that every leader before has taken. To faithfully execute the Office of President and to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States. Every American, whether we supported him or not, hopes that he will live up to that solemn responsibility.”
“As the United States Representative for California’s 19th Congressional District, and as I faithfully did during the past two Administrations, I will continue to fulfill my responsibility to govern by working to find common ground with anybody for federal legislation, federal funding, and solutions that help, promote, and perpetuate the people and values of our home. At the federal level and as a member of the House Ways and Means Committee, I am committed to my continued work on legislation and solutions for the affordability issues that are pervasive throughout our community. There is progress to be made on housing, environmental stewardship, public safety, immigration reform, national security, and more. I will work with anybody and any administration to pursue areas of agreement and aggressively deliver for the people I serve.
“I also firmly believe that our diversity is our strength and our unity is the power to endure and succeed no matter the many challenges that we face. Law-abiding immigrants, the LGBTQ+ community, women, and families recovering from devastating natural disasters are understandably worried by the rhetoric from the campaign trail and potential policies from the Trump Administration. However, when we come together, we bolster our never-ending fight to protect our rights, progress, and values that are core to our community, humanity, and the on-going experiment that is our democracy.
“Today, at the United States Capitol, as we have done throughout our history we ushered in a new chapter to our nation’s story. But as is always the case, it won’t be written by one person, but by all Americans.”
