Rep. Panetta Secures Federal Investments Making the 19th Congressional District A Leader in Clean Energy

December 20, 2023

San Jose, CA – New research by the Center For American Progress demonstrates that California’s 19th Congressional District is a leader in federal investments for clean energy.  United States Representative Jimmy Panetta (CA-19) helped secure $719 million to support the expansion of local operations over the past year.  The report lists California’s 19th Congressional District, which includes South San Jose, parts of Santa Cruz and Monterey Counties, as well as Northern San Luis Obispo County, as one of the leading areas in the country for clean energy storage technology.

Rep. Panetta helped author and pass into law the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) during the 117th Congress, landmark legislation that represented the single largest investment in human history to tackle climate change.  In total, more than $200 billion has been put toward the development and deployment of clean energy technologies in the United States, with more on the way.

“As a U.S. Representative for the 19th Congressional District, it is my responsibility to ensure that the federal government plays its part to protect the unique beauty and bounty of our home from the threat of climate change,” said Rep. Panetta.  “The investments that we made in clean energy last Congress are transforming our country through clean technology, like battery storage, that is enabling us to reduce emissions, increase energy efficiency, and create thousands of jobs in the process.  I’m working hard to secure federal support for the innovative initiatives taking place in our community and proud that the 19th Congressional District is leading the way when it comes to reducing our carbon output.”

New investments in clean energy technology are working to reduce energy costs, reduce pollution, and increase access to new, good-paying jobs. Since the passage of the IRA, more than 211,000 jobs have been created, with 9 million new jobs projected by 2030.  In just one year, the investments of this legislation have spurred approximately $242.81 billion in private investments, largely in building clean energy technology.

Rep. Panetta authored several bills that were signed into law under the IRA, providing tax credits for the purchase of electric buses, expansion of microgrid controllers, and development of linear generators.  Rep. Panetta recently authored and introduced bipartisan legislation to extend the Inflation Reduction Act’s investment tax credit (ITC) for fuel cells, linear generators, and microgrid controllers by another eight years.
