Rep. Panetta Recognized with 2023 Affordable Housing Champion Award

October 26, 2023

Monterey, CA – U.S. Representative Jimmy Panetta (CA-19) was awarded the 2023 Affordable Housing Champion Award, which honors members of Congress who exhibit outstanding leadership in the U.S. Congress toward the advancement of policies that expand affordable housing through the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (Housing Credit).  The award was given by the Affordable Housing Tax Credit Coalition (AHTCC).

Rep. Panetta is a co-lead of the bipartisan Affordable Housing Credit Improvement Act (AHCIA).  First introduced in 2016, this comprehensive legislation expands and strengthens the Housing Credit, our nation’s primary tool for financing affordable rental housing in rural, suburban, and urban communities alike.  Crucially, the AHCIA will reduce existing barriers to double the number of Housing Credit-funded projects in California.

“Affordable housing is one of the most pressing challenges facing us in California’s 19th Congressional District,” said Rep. Panetta.  “At the federal level, we’re playing our part with bipartisan solutions, like the Affordable Housing Credit Improvement Act.  By increasing the amount of federal low-income tax credits, we’d significantly increase the amount of affordable housing all across our communities and country.  I look forward to continuing to lead on these commonsense and common ground solutions so that everybody can have an opportunity to not just work in our communities, but also afford to call it home.”

Past recipients of the Affordable Housing Champion Award have included Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (CA-12), Senate Finance Committee Chairman Ron Wyden (D-OR), Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA), House Ways and Means Committee Ranking Member Richard Neal (MA-01) and Rep. Suzan DelBene (WA-01).

“We are honored to present the 2023 Affordable Housing Champion Award to Congressman Jimmy Panetta, a leading advocate for affordable housing in the U.S. House of Representatives.  Rep. Panetta has for years fought to expand and strengthen the Housing Credit, the country’s primary program for financing affordable rental housing,” said AHTCC Chief Executive Officer Emily Cadik.  “As the U.S. continues to grapple with a severe shortage of affordable housing, Congressman Panetta’s leadership on the Affordable Housing Credit Improvement Act has been instrumental in building bipartisan support for policies that would spur the development of more affordable housing in California and nationwide.”

“Finding a bipartisan solution to the affordable housing crisis facing our country grows more urgent every day,” said Ryan Sfreddo, President of the AHTCC Board of Directors and Chief Executive Officer of Red Stone Equity Partners.  “We are grateful for Congressman Panetta’s leadership on the Affordable Housing Credit Improvement Act, critical legislation that would finance significantly more affordable rental housing for communities across the country at a time when it is so desperately needed.”
