May 17, 2024

Monterey, CA – United States Representative Jimmy Panetta (CA-19) secured $170,000 to support local arts and humanities programs throughout California’s 19th Congressional District.  This federal investment, through the National Endowment for the Arts, will help community music programs, festivals, artwork, and performances continue to reach new audiences.

Rep. Panetta proudly announced funding for the Monterey Jazz Festival, Santa Cruz Museum of Art & History (MAH) at the McPherson Center, Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music, and the Kuumbwa Jazz Society.  Individual grants range in size and are aimed at expanding opportunities for public engagement with the arts and arts education in California’s 19th Congressional District.

“Opportunities to enjoy and get involved in the arts help strengthen our bonds as a community and elevate the quality of life of all who live in California’s 19th Congressional District,” said Rep. Panetta.  “This federal support for local arts programs will help showcase local talent, deepen our appreciation for music, art, and performance, and bolster arts education for all ages.  I’m proud to represent such a bastion of creativity in the United States House of Representatives and look forward to sharing these experiences with our community.”

The announced funding includes a $55,000 federal grant to support the Monterey Jazz Festival which since 1958 has brought together legendary jazz musicians, composers, and young rising stars to celebrate and educate the musical talent in our community.  A federal grant of $50,000 to support a series of temporary artworks and performances at the Santa Cruz MAH, a thriving community gathering place to appreciate local art.  A $35,000 federal investment in the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music which provides an annual local showcase for emerging composers and musicians to celebrate new pieces of music and creativity.  And a $30,000 to support Santa Cruz’s Kuumbwa Jazz Society, which presents over 130 concerts and teaches over 1,000 students each year, as it celebrates its landmark 50th anniversary.
