Rep. Panetta Announces $619,731 Federal Grant from American Rescue Plan for UCSC Baskin School of Engineering

February 11, 2022

SALINAS, CA – Today, Rep. Jimmy Panetta (D-CA) announced a $619,731 federal grant to the University of California, Santa Cruz, for complex distributed software systems research. This project is funded through the American Rescue Plan and will directly engage undergraduate students in the research process. Complex distributed software systems are used in everyday file-sharing technologies, and this research will support real-world applications.

"Providing federal resources to institutions like UC Santa Cruz, who are exploring state-of-the-art technologies and innovations, is how we can stay competitive as a country in the global economy," said Rep. Jimmy Panetta. "The resources we are providing through the American Rescue Plan for research and development at the Baskin School of Engineering will bolster our complex distributed software systems and build trust in our online communications. It will also provide a number of undergraduate students at UCSC with tangible professional experiences in the field that they can apply in their future careers."

"People rely on complex distributed software systems in many aspects of their day-to-day lives, from email and file sharing to videoconferencing and online gaming, but programming such systems is notoriously difficult and error-prone," said Assistant Professor Lindsey Kuper, Computer Science and Engineering, UC Santa Cruz. "This grant will support research that aims to improve the overall trustworthiness and reliability of these systems. The educational and outreach component of the project will involve undergraduate students in cutting-edge research and help them build their scientific communication skills."

"In addition to the intrinsic value of this work – building confidence in complex systems – this project emphasizes the importance of communicating these concepts, and provides undergraduates with the opportunity to develop creative, open-source materials," said Dean Alex Wolf, Baskin School of Engineering, UC Santa Cruz
