Rep. Panetta Announces $2.3 Million in Federal Funding for New Monterey Regional Airport Terminal
Monterey, CA – United States Representative Jimmy Panetta (CA-19) announced $2,368,257 in federal funding to support construction of the new replacement terminal at Monterey Regional Airport (MRY). The federal grant, awarded through the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) Airport Improvement Program, will cover the design team’s inspection activities during construction of the new 62,754-square-foot public space terminal with five gates and passenger boarding bridges. The funding supports Phase 7 of the project.
“This federal investment will help Monterey Regional Airport move forward with a modern terminal that bolsters safety, efficiency, accessibility, and the passenger experience,” said Rep. Panetta. “This airport plays an important role in connecting our residents and visitors while supporting tourism, local businesses, and economic activity throughout California’s 19th Congressional District. I’m proud that the federal government continues to play its part by investing in the infrastructure and improvements needed to ensure that Monterey Regional Airport can safely and effectively serve our region well into the future.”
“The replacement terminal is more than an airport project. It is an investment in the future of our region. This additional funding will help us deliver critical infrastructure improvements while enhancing the travel experience for the millions of passengers who rely on Monterey Regional Airport. We thank Congressman Panetta for his leadership and commitment to securing resources that benefit our community and local economy,” said Chris Morello, MRY Executive Director.
The airport’s existing terminal opened in 1950. FAA is requiring that the passenger facilities be relocated to accommodate federally required operational safety enhancements to Taxiway A, which connects to the airport’s primary commercial runway. The replacement terminal is designed to be accessible, easier for passengers to navigate, and responsive to the airport’s growing demand. The design also calls for the terminal to be zero-net-energy ready and incorporate sustainable materials and features that are emblematic of the Monterey region.
This announcement follows Rep. Panetta’s previous efforts to secure over $69 million in federal funding for Monterey Regional Airport’s modernization, supporting terminal design, tarmac improvements, and other safety upgrades.
The Airport Improvement Program provides federal grants for airport infrastructure projects, including runways, taxiways, signage, lighting, and markings. These investments strengthen the nation’s aviation infrastructure.
