Rep. Jimmy Panetta’s Statement on Recent Diplomatic Trip to Israel and the Middle East

January 12, 2024

Monterey, CA – United States Representative Jimmy Panetta (CA-19) released the following statement regarding his recent bipartisan, bicameral congressional delegation trip to Israel and the Middle East:

“Just three days after October 7th, I was a part of the first congressional delegation to go into Israel to demonstrate our concern and condolences after the bloodthirsty attack by Hamas.  Just over three months later as the war marks its hundredth day, it was imperative to return to the region to express our sustained support for Israel and our allies, as well as put pressure on them to continue their negotiations for a quick and peaceful resolution to this very complex and difficult conflict.

“Our bipartisan congressional delegation met with the leaders of Egypt, Israel, Qatar, and Bahrain as we pressed for the release of hostages and negotiations for another truce.  We stressed the importance of balancing Israel’s security interests with the need to protect Gazan civilians.  We advocated for pinpoint and targeted operations as Israel defends itself by removing Hamas leadership and an increase of humanitarian aid in Gaza.  And finally, we discussed the potential for normalization and ways in which we can find a clear pathway for long term stability and peace in the region.

“We also met with recently released hostages, families of hostages currently being held in Gaza, and victims of the attack.  We went to kibbutz Nir Oz, which is located less than a mile from Gaza, and saw the horrific damage from the October 7th attack.

“As my constituents have experienced throughout my limited time as their United States Representative, rather than just act outraged, I act and work toward solutions.  That is why I went to the region again and can sit down and have credible, necessary, and tough conversations with the leaders of those countries.  Although it was a very emotional trip, it was also very impactful and meaningful as I continue to support and work with Israel and our allies and press for peace and prosperity in the Middle East.”

Rep. Panetta traveled to the Middle East alongside U.S. Senators Joni Ernst (R-IA), Ted Budd (R-NC) and Reps. Darell Issa (CA-48), Debbie Wasserman Schultz (FL-25), Mariannette Miller-Meeks (IA-01), Donald Norcross (NJ-01), and Ann Wagner (MO-02).  The delegation met with senior leadership and lead negotiators in Egypt, Israel, Qatar, and Bahrain.
