Rep. Jimmy Panetta’s Statement on Passage of a Short-term Continuing Resolution to Fund the Federal Government
Washington, DC – United States Representative Jimmy Panetta (CA-19), a member of the House Ways and Means and Budget Committees, released the following statement in response to the passage of a short-term, 45-day, continuing resolution to fund the federal government:
“Government shutdowns hurt our country. And while Congress was able to avert a government shutdown for the time being, we should never have gotten to this point in the first place. We now have 45 days to do our job and come to an agreement that will move our country forward.
“Democrats and Republicans in the House of Representatives just passed legislation by a vote of 335-91 to keep the government open and fund much-needed disaster relief. It is embarrassing that it occurred less than 12 hours before the deadline, but for the past few weeks, Speaker McCarthy continued to try to reason with the unreasonable right-wing extremists in his party.
“In finally working with Democrats, Congress kept the government open. Now we must work hard in a bipartisan way, and within the parameters of the previously agreed upon Fiscal Responsibility Act, to fund the government and avoid another shutdown drama, create a fiscal commission for economic responsibility, and aid Ukraine in their fight for democracy.”
The legislation passed today extends federal funding at 2023 levels for 45 days, includes $16 billion in emergency disaster relief, and extends authorization for the Federal Aviation Administration and National Flood Insurance Program.
