Rep. Jimmy Panetta’s Statement on the Passage of Security Assistance for America’s Democratic Allies
Washington, DC – United States Representative Jimmy Panetta (CA-19) released the following statement on the passage of security aid for America’s democratic allies:
“With the passage of the national security package, the United States of America is demonstrating its leadership when it comes to protecting democracies and promoting our shared democratic values around the world. I’m glad that Speaker Mike Johnson finally realized his responsibilities when it comes to his role and allowed my colleagues and I, Democrats and Republicans, to vote on a comprehensive package of bills, that is very similar to the bipartisan legislation sent to us from the United States Senate back in February. Despite the extreme politics that slowed the Speaker from scheduling this vote, I’m proud that we eventually came together, with overwhelming Democratic support, and did our job by passing this bipartisan national security supplemental legislation.
“The package would deliver critical support for Ukraine in its efforts to push back against Russia’s unprovoked war of aggression, safeguard Taiwan from an advancing China, and ensure the security of the nation of Israel in a volatile Middle East. Moreover, the legislation provides massive amounts of crucial humanitarian aid for civilians in Ukraine, Gaza, Haiti, Sudan, and other areas where people are caught in conflict or natural disasters. Democracies are not just counting on ammunition in their efforts to defend themselves, they also count on the United States to live up to its long tradition of providing support and aid. I’m proud to have voted for this legislation which furthers our nation’s commitment, bolsters our credibility, and fulfills our responsibility as the world’s leading democracy.”
The $95 billion national security package includes; $61 billion for Ukraine, $26 billion for Israel, $8 billion to bolster defense capabilities in the Indo-Pacific, and $9 billion for global humanitarian assistance. It also includes provisions to combat fentanyl trafficking and support the sale of seized Russian assets to support Ukraine.
