Rep. Jimmy Panetta Announces AmeriCorps VISTA Project for South San Jose

August 10, 2023

San Jose, CA – United States Representative Jimmy Panetta (CA-19) secured a $90,360 grant from AmeriCorps to support San Jose Public Libraries’ efforts to expand college and career pathways, close the digital divide, and promote literacy.  Funding will support four AmeriCorps VISTA members to serve the neighborhoods of South San Jose.

“Service and volunteerism among our young people can have a transformational impact in our country,” said Rep. Panetta.  “Through this new funding, we’ll further the mission of public libraries in South San Jose to bring educational resources and support to residents of all backgrounds.  AmeriCorps members bring out the best in America, and I look forward to working alongside them to better our community.”

In addition to the award announced today, AmeriCorps will also provide more than $27,000 each year in education scholarships for the AmeriCorps VISTA members supported by this award to help pay for college, vocational training, or pay back student loans.

AmeriCorps members in the VISTA program bring passion and perseverance where the need is greatest: to organizations that help address poverty.  AmeriCorps VISTA positions provide a living allowance, skill-building, training and support, health and childcare support, an education award or end of service stipend, and the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of California residents.

Every year, tens of thousands of AmeriCorps members serve through 21,000+ schools, nonprofits, community and faith-based organizations, and state, tribal, and local governments across the country. Since the program’s inception in 1994, more than 1 million Americans have served in AmeriCorps, providing more than 1.6 billion hours of service and earning more than $4 billion in education scholarships.  Those interested in joining AmeriCorps can learn more at AmeriCorps.gov/Join.
