Panetta Statement Regarding President Trump’s Executive Order on Offshore Drilling

April 28, 2017

WASHINGTON – Congressman Jimmy Panetta (D-Calif.) today released the following statement on President Donald Trump's executive order, "Implementing an America-First Offshore Energy Strategy":

"This executive order's intent to expand offshore oil drilling could threaten our and our children's way of life. Instead of endangering our pristine coastlines and healthy ocean, we should be supporting research for cleaner power and investing in renewable energy resources. I will be vigilantly monitoring the implementation of this executive order and I will continue to fight against any attempts to reopen California's coast to offshore oil drilling."

The first bill that Congressman Panetta cosponsored in Congress, the West Coast Ocean Protection Act of 2017, would prohibit the exploration and drilling of oil and natural gas off the Pacific Coast. Congressman Panetta is also a cosponsor of the California Clean Coast Act, to permanently ban future offshore oil and gas leasing in areas of the Outer Continental Shelf off the coast of California.
