Panetta Praises California Coastal National Monument Expansion

January 12, 2017

WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman Jimmy Panetta (D-Calif) praised President Obama for expanding the existing California Coastal National Monument by 6,230 acres by adding to the existing monument, which stretches for 1,100 miles along the length of California. The monument currently protects more than 20,000 rocks and small islands, including areas already off California's Central Coast.

"I'm thrilled to see President Obama continue to protect our public areas for future generations," said Congressman Panetta. "Along the Central Coast, our $2.5 billion travel and tourism industry, which is a vital piece of our local economy, relies on keeping our oceans healthy and preserving pristine views. The Central Coast is an excellent example of what can happen when we protect our ocean. I look forward to continuing to support protecting our irreplaceable natural resources for my daughters and children across the country."

The California Coastal National Monument was established by President Clinton and previously expanded by President Obama in 2014. The expansion will protect irreplaceable natural resources, scenic views, and areas of cultural and historical significance.
