Congressman Panetta Statement on President Trump’s First State of the Union Address
WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Jimmy Panetta (CA-20) released the following statement in response to President Donald Trump's first State of the Union address:
"Tonight, President Trump delivered his first State of the Union address. Although he spoke of unity and compromise, his actions have yet to show this commitment. He has maintained his scare tactics about immigration, politicized our national security, and spoke of his so-called "America-first" trade agenda that would put California agriculture last.
"For the state of our union to truly be strong, we must foster an environment where all members of our community can prosper. Congress must pass a permanent legislative solution to protect our DREAMers and take a long overdue bipartisan approach to comprehensive immigration reform. Our national security challenges must be met with smart, strategic, and strong policies that keep us safe, undermine our adversaries, and empower our allies. Our trade deals should promote export opportunities for our agriculture industry while ensuring fair prices at the grocery store for families across the country.
"As Congress works to address the many challenges facing our nation, including fixing our broken immigration system, investing in infrastructure, and passing a long-term budget, it is my hope that the Administration will apply tonight's message of bipartisanship and collaboration. In the year ahead, I am committed to working with Members of Congress on both sides of the aisle to serve everyone living across the central coast of California and our nation."
