Congressman Panetta Statement on the Majority’s Failure to Avert a Government Shutdown

January 20, 2018

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Jimmy Panetta (D-CA) released the following statement in response to the Majority's failure to avert a government shutdown:

"Tonight, Congress failed to fulfill its fundamental duty to fund the federal government. Now, thousands of military families, national security professionals, visa recipients, and government employees living on the central coast of California and across the country will be forced to deal with the uncertainty of this partial government shutdown. Congress must come together to responsibly find a long-term budget solution to fund our government and address critical policy priorities including funding community health centers, providing aid to Californians recovering from natural disasters, and passing a bipartisan solution to protect Dreamers. Despite this shutdown, all of my congressional offices in Salinas, Santa Cruz, and Washington, D.C. will remain open to provide constituents with essential services. I will remain here in Washington to negotiate with my colleagues to come to an agreement to reopen our government."
