Congressman Panetta Joins Effort to Force Vote to Restore Vital Net Neutrality Protections

May 21, 2018

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Jimmy Panetta (CA-20) signed a discharge petition to force a vote to restore net neutrality protections. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) moved in December 2017 to roll back net neutrality rules for Internet providers put in place under the previous Administration. On May 16, the Senate passed a measure restoring net neutrality rules.

"Net neutrality has a huge impact on the central coast of California's entrepreneurs, small businesses, and economy. That is why I was against the FCC's decision to repeal net neutrality rules," said Congressman Panetta. "I am proud to stand with my colleagues and take action to restore net neutrality, which will promote competition and free speech, and protect consumers throughout California."

In January 2018, Congressman Panetta cosponsored a resolution, introduced by Congressman Mike Doyle of Pennsylvania, to overturn the "Restoring Internet Freedom" order that the FCC adopted. This bill, under the Congressional Review Act, allow Congress to overturn agency decisions with majority votes in each chamber, and a signature from the president.
