Congressman Panetta Announces $30,199 in Federal Funding for Central Coast Housing

September 2, 2020

SALINAS, CA – Today, Congressman Jimmy Panetta (D-Carmel Valley) announced $30,199 in federal grant funding for the Housing Authority of the County of Santa Cruz. The grant money will support the Housing Authority of the County of Santa Cruz's assistance to low-income residents served by the Housing Choice Voucher (Section 8) program. The funding was provided by the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act through the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Moderate Rehabilitation Program.

"Affordable housing is another crisis we face on the central coast of California. This grant money will help the Housing Authority of the County of Santa Cruz provide affordable and safe housing to our friends and neighbors who are most in need," said Congressman Panetta. "As housing insecurity challenges are intensified due to the crisis of COVID-19, Congress is doing its part to provide the necessary funding so that thousands of families remain safe and secure during this pandemic and beyond."

"HUD's Moderate Rehabilitation Program has provided deeply subsidized affordable housing for low income residents in Santa Cruz County for decades," said Jenny Panetta, Executive Director, Housing Authority of the County of Santa Cruz. "These additional funds through the CARES Act help to ensure that the rental assistance supporting these units can keep pace with increases in our rental market, making the program sustainable for years to come."

The CARES Act provided $1 billion for project-based rental assistance. The Department of Housing and Urban Development allocated $10 million of that amount for the Moderate Rehabilitation Program.
