Congressman Panetta Announces $2.4 Million in Grants for Central Coast Hispanic-Serving Institutions
SALINAS, CA – Today, Congressman Jimmy Panetta (D-Carmel Valley) announced $2.4 million in grant funding for local Hispanic Serving Institutions. Monterey Peninsula College, Hartnell College, California State University, Monterey Bay, and the University of California, Santa Cruz each received $600,000 in Developing Hispanic-Serving Institutions (DHSI) grants from the Department of Education.
Earlier this year, Congressman Panetta requested $170 million specifically for the DHSI program in appropriations legislation.
"Many Latino and Hispanic students in our community are working very hard to manage their studies during this pandemic. This funding will increase the opportunities for those students, especially as they navigate school during these tough times," said Congressman Panetta. "I will continue to advocate for this type of funding in Congress to support our students at Hispanic-Serving Institutions on the Central Coast."
The DHSI Program provides grants to assist Hispanic-Serving Institutions to expand educational opportunities and improve the attainment of Hispanic students. These grants also enable HSIs to expand and enhance their academic offerings, program quality, and institutional stability.
