Local Reaction to Trump's "NO MORE DACA DEAL" statement

April 2, 2018

MONTEREY COUNTY, Calif. - President Trump tweeted Sunday morning, "NO MORE DACA DEAL." His statement comes just one week after tweeting the Democrats "abandoned" DACA, but he would not.

There are roughly 800,000 recipients of the program nationwide, many of them are on the Central Coast. Their future is still up in the air.

"Fear. Something that I feel its being timed. Like my future is being timed," DACA Recipient and Hartnell College student, Estefania Miranda, said.

Leonardo Juarez says he still has hope. "We are just driving through the darkness, and we don't know what's going to happen. But it is going to be alright."

Both students tell KION the change didn't surprise them, but they are disappointed.

"It feels like we have no support from him," Miranda, said. Juarez says it has been "exhausting."

President Trump has blamed Democrats for not getting a deal passed. Congressman Jimmy Panetta says that is not true. "There are a number of Republicans and a number of Democrats who are fighting to have some sort of reform."

He adds, the President, however, is needed to make a deal happen."

"I just wish the President would do what he says and lead on this issue, because in order for this issue to get solved, in order for a number of other issues to get solved, he needs to lead."
