How the central coast is honoring veterans

November 10, 2017

SALINAS, Calif. —

Salinas Valley Memorial Healthcare System is continuing its long running tradition of honoring military men and women who died serving our country this Veterans Day. Today, staff and members placed dozens of small flags along E. Romie Ln. near the hospital.

"My father served in the United States Army and stormed the beaches of Normandy during World War II. Last year, my father became the first veteran interned at the California Central Coast Veterans Cemetery and I know he would be pleased with this tribute to all our veterans," said Kate DeSalvo, Director Medical Staff Services.

Veterans Day was also observed inside the hospital. This year, the staff was encouraged to send in pictures of themselves or loved ones who have served or are serving in the military for a slide show which played in the cafeteria Friday.

The Veterans Day flag tribute will remain up through Monday.

On Saturday, local Veterans Day tributes continue with parades, ceremonies and celebrations. In Salinas, Former Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta will serve as Grand Marshall for a parade through Oldtown on S. Main Street. His son, Congressman Jimmy Panetta, will also be in attendance. The opening ceremony is at 1 p.m., the parade starts at 2 p.m.

Congressman Panetta will also attend the San Benito Veterans Day celebration in Hollister where he will be a guest speaker at the banner presentation at the Veterans Memorial Building at 10 in the morning. The 16th annual San Benito County Veterans Day Parade begins at 1:30 p.m. and runs through downtown Hollister.
