Carmel synagogue to host gathering to honor Pittsburgh shooting victims

October 29, 2018

CARMEL – Congregation Beth Israel will be hosting a "Gathering of Mourning and Hope" to honor the Pittsburgh shooting victims at an event that will see its own increased security in the shadow of the recent tragedy.

"I've been filled with conflicting emotions, one of which is the security at this gathering," said Rabbi Bruce Greenbaum. "We're looking at long-term increased security, which is a sad statement on our society."

Greenbaum said the gathering will have a mix of speakers including non-clergy and non-Jewish participants. A candle will be lit for each of the 11 people killed and a few words will be said about each one. "I will offer a message of home for a better future and understanding."

Rep. Jimmy Panetta, D-Carmel Valley, will also be in attendance with a message of unity and coming together. Rabbi Jeff Shulman and others will lead parts of the service and Cantor Alisa Fineman will sing mourning prayers and prayers of comfort, said Greenbaum.

"This horrific event affects everyone and everyone is welcome to mourn, remember, pray and hope. As our hearts go out to the victims and survivors, we gather to show our support for our community and each other," stated the message on the Carmel synagogue's website.

Greenbaum said he hopes as many people as possible will come and join the event to celebrate life and diversity.

"We'll add more chairs if we need to. It is time to shift the direction of separation and division to one of acceptance and love. It's time to recognize there is only one human race. Every time we build boundaries, we hurt ourselves. When one is hurt or killed, we all must cry out in pain," he said.
