May 16, 2017

CARMEL >> "La Vieja," a black and white photograph by Carmel High School sophomore Korenna Fife is the winning entry of the 2017 Congressional Art Competition for the 20th Congressional District.

The winners of this year's contest were announced Thursday during a reception held at the Hollister Veterans' Memorial Building.

"I am impressed by the artistic talent that these high school students displayed," Rep. Jimmy Panetta, Carmel Valley, said in a prepared statement. "I commend everyone who participated in this competition, and thank their family members, teachers, and mentors for supporting these budding artists."

Fife's piece will be displayed in the corridors of the Capitol in Washington. Fife and a family member are invited to attend a special Congressional Art Competition ceremony with other young artists from around the country in Washington at the end of June.

The second winning entry was "Gloria" by Aeja Rosette, a junior at San Benito High School. Rosette's piece will be displayed in Panetta's Washington office. "Playing with Time," the third place entry by Stevenson School junior Seon Ha Yun, will be displayed in Panetta's district office.

Three San Benito High students earned honorable mentions: Saul Martinez with "Man's Best Friend," Jasmine Ulloa with "Panda Stare" and Jenniffer Flores with "Panthera Tigris."

Elliot Wholey of Georgiania Bruce Kirby Preparatory School also earned an honorable mention with "Wisdom of the Raven," as did Cate Ogata of Carmel with "Divided."

It's the first time that Carmel High's art teacher Holly Lederle had entered her students' art and she said she's thrilled with the results.

"We're really happy," she said. "It's so much fun to showcase high quality work. I have wonderful students and I'm happy to have them celebrated."
