Rep. Panetta Secures More than $22.7 Million For 15 Local Projects
WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Representative Jimmy Panetta (D-Carmel Valley) today announced $22,711,539 in Community Project Funding that he secured in the 117th Congress for local initiatives in California's 20th District. The projects support the infrastructure, education, health care, housing, community safety, and environmental needs of residents across the central coast of California. Funding was included in the final 2023 appropriations government funding package which was signed into law on December 29, 2022.
"Our communities face many challenges when it comes to building affordable housing, reducing homelessness, ensuring justice and public safety, mitigating the effects of climate change, providing engaging educational experiences, and developing the modern infrastructure that improves quality of life," said Rep. Panetta. "I'm proud to ensure that the federal government plays its part with this significant investment in numerous projects that will help solve many of our pressing local issues. I hope to continue this type of work in Congress so that the power of its purse has a tangible impact solving the issues and supporting the people of the 19th Congressional District."
Rep. Panetta championed funding for 15 projects that will directly benefit the people of this congressional district. These include:
- $3,500,000 for Capitola Wharf Renovations to improve the wharf's resiliency in the face of severe storm surge damage, sea level rise, and climate change and improve ADA-compliant visitor serving facilities.
- $3,000,000 for the Harvey West Studios to serve community members experiencing homelessness, including those that are medically vulnerable, living with disabilities, and veterans experiencing homelessness. It will be the largest permanent supportive housing project in Santa Cruz County.
- $3,000,000 for the Monterey-Salinas Transit's Zero Emission Bus and Microgrid Project to purchase zero emission electric buses and charging infrastructure, as well as preconstruction activities to support a microgrid system critical to preparing the region for wildfire resilience.
- $2,000,000 for the Pacific North Redevelopment, a LEED Platinum, Net-Zero Energy, all-electric, mixed-use 100% affordable transit-oriented development project that will be the first of its kind multifamily housing project in the Central Coast to use renewable construction materials while supporting renewable energy efforts.
- $2,000,000 for the Santa Cruz Downtown Library Mixed Use Project for the reconstruction of the downtown Santa Cruz Public Library and to help fund the addition of 125 units of affordable housing.
- $1,640,000 for the Western Flyer Coast Guard Pier Repair and Classroom Design to repair the existing City of Monterey Coast Guard pier to accommodate pedestrian public access and install a new linear floating dock for the restored Western Flyer, an historic vessel which will provide an at-sea STEM experience.
- $1,416,000 for the Soquel Creek Water District Water Reliability Improvement Project for the replacement of aging and undersized water delivery pipe to improve reliability and resilience.
- $1,252,000 for the Monterey One Water for a Cybersecurity and SCADA Resilience Project to strengthen Monterey One Water's cyber defenses and upgrade critical assets to withstand challenges, including external digital threats.
- $1,165,000 for the Salinas Police for Integrated Technology for Community Safety to support an integrated technology project for officer safety.
- $1,000,000 for the Santa Cruz County Office of Education, Santa Cruz, CA for behavioral health services and treatment to students and families across the varied landscape of Santa Cruz County.
- $1,000,000 for the US 101 Auxiliary Lane to make operational improvements and address safety issues along northbound US 101 south of Salinas by extending the existing northbound acceleration lane to allow adequate space for vehicles to accelerate and decelerate.
- $900,000 for the Castroville Seawater Intrusion Project for the design, engineering, and construction of a supplemental well in Northern Monterey County to reduce groundwater extraction within seawater intruded areas and improve water reliability and stability.
- $400,000 for the City of Santa Cruz for a Cooperative Fire Management Project to create and support vegetation management projects limit community risk and exposure to the dangers of wildland fires.
- $275,000 for the Monterey County Family Justice Center to continue providing the most effective, efficient, meaningful and compassionate services possible to victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, human trafficking, child abuse, and their children. Funding will be used to improve facilities and hire additional personnel to serve the public.
- $163,539 for Cabrillo College Learning Labs and Student Success Spaces to improve learning spaces at the Aptos and Watsonville Cabrillo College Campuses and support student success.
