Rep. Panetta’s Statement on the Ceasefire Agreement Between Israel and Hamas
Monterey, CA – United States Representative Jimmy Panetta (CA-19) released the following statement on the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas, as well as the work ahead to secure a lasting peace in the Middle East:
“The agreement between Israel and Hamas demonstrates the potential for peace not just in Gaza, but also throughout the region, as well as the diplomatic determination of the United States government. With its temporary truce and phased release of hostages, the agreement provides precious hope for the families of hostages who have waited in agony for far too long. Securing the release of hostages will also set the stage for others to come home, provide for Israel’s security, and ensure humanitarian assistance is surged to Palestinian civilians who have been in harm’s way. We will never forget Hamas’ bloodthirsty attack on October 7th and their ongoing atrocities, including the use of human shields and oppression of innocent civilians in Gaza. And we will not rest until the remaining hostages are returned and lasting peace and security are realized for Israel, the Palestinian people, and the entire Middle East region.
“Throughout this conflict, I maintained that the pursuit of a just end to this war and a peaceful future for Israelis and Palestinians and the region depends on constant engagement and difficult conversations about complicated topics at home and abroad. Over the last year and a half, I traveled to the region on multiple occasions and met with leaders of the United States, Israel, Arab countries, NGOs, and nonprofits operating in Gaza, as well as with constituents in California’s 19th Congressional District with a myriad of perspectives on the pathway to peace. These conversations were at times emotional or confrontational but always grounded in my firm belief in America’s ironclad and unbreakable commitment to the safety and security of Israel, support for peaceful Palestinians who desire self-determination, and the moral clarity that peace in the region can be achieved with the consistent diplomacy and stalwart leadership of the United States.”
